My son has a Kindle Fire and stumbbled upon World of Cubes. I then downloaded it on my iPhoen as well so I could play and try to help him out when he had questions.  It would seem however that there are differences in our versions, for example:

My iPhone version has an item "Gate" which his does not.  he wants to build a farm but as you can imagine it's pretty tough getting an animal in a fence without a gate.

On my iPhone version I was able to purchase a compas to find my way home, but I can't find the same avaialble on his Kindle version, does this exist?

I feel like in peaceful mode he has more animals available on his Kindle version than what I have on my iPhone version (also in peaceful)

There may be other differencees that I'm not recalling at the moment as well.

No, there's not really much of a difference between versions, except maybe a few old abandoned versions are outdated.

BlueTangs Rock2, I assume the developer doesn't really check these forums and could tell me where to find the compas and gate specifically in the Kindle version.  Anyone else here happen to know where these items are on the Kindle?

what update does your game's main menu screen say?

If it's one post-V2.5, they locked the compass access to an amount of in-game coins.

Instead of how Planet of Cubes does their coin mechanics (where they'll give you 40 coins every other day you play it), the only way to get coins in World of Cubes is by following them on various social medias(though as this is a one-time limited source of coins, you can unfollow them once you get the coins, but you still wouldn't have enough coins for a compass I believe, so you'll have to pay the rest with real money.

There used to be a free renewable way to get coins by tapping a button in the in-game shop that would load ads and it'ld give you coins, though shortly after V2.5,(probably in V2.7) they removed this feature, so free coins sources are non-renewable since then.

As for gates, if you have the newest update, they introduced gates, and you should be able to find them somewhere in the crafting table as a crafting recipe.

Though for last moment clerificarion, the V_._ update system I mention is for the Google play edition, so update numbers may or may not be different for the same feature update, as the two versions were created at different times.
